The Holy Spirit (Part Two)

As I mentioned in the previous post about the Holy Spirit, He is the third Member of the Godhead.  He is God.  We see evidence of this in the following Scriptures:

Called God - But Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself?  While it remained, was it not in your own control?  Why have you conceived this thing in your heart.  You have not lied to me but to God" (Acts 5:3, 4). He was not just lying to the Spirit of Truth but to God. It was the Holy Spirit who had revealed what Ananias was doing to Peter. As God, He is omniscient like God, the Father and God, the Son.

Joined with the Father and the Son - "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit" (Matthew 28:19).

"The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion (fellowship) of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen" (2 Corinthians 13:14).

Eternal - "...how much shall the blood of Christ who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot (blemish) to God, purge (cleanse) your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?" (Hebrews 9:14).

Omnipotent - And the angel answered and said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God" (Luke 1:35). Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit. Matthew 1:18 states, Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit.

"The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD" (Isaiah 11:2).  Isaiah is foretelling that Jesus will be anointed with the Holy Spirit.

"...in mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God, so that from Jerusalem and round about to Illyricum, I have fully preached the Gospel of Christ" (Romans 15:19).

Omniscient - "But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit.  For the Spirit searches all things, yes the deep things of God.  For what man knows the things of man except the spirit of man which is in him?  Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God" (1 Corinthians 2:10, 11).

"Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. These things we also speak, not in words which man's wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual" (1 Corinthians 2:12, 13).

OmnipresentWhere can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend into heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there. If I take the wings of the morning, And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, Even there Your hand shall lead me, And Your right hand shall hold me.  If I say, “Surely the darkness shall fall on me,” Even the night shall be light about me; Indeed, the darkness shall not hide from You, But the night shines as the day; The darkness and the light are both alike to You. For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother’s womb. (Psalm 139:7-13). This is simply saying that wherever we are, the Spirit of God is always present. He is not limited. He can be in many places at once unlike Jesus who, when He was here, could only be in one place at a time. However, through the Holy Spirit, He can be with omnipresent.

Creator - The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters (Genesis 1:2).

"You send forth Your Spirit, they are created;  And You renew the face of the earth" (Psalm 104:30).

Sovereign - "And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all.  But on and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills" (1 Corinthians 12:6, 11).

New Creation - Jesus answered and said to him, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.  The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes.  So is everyone who is born of the Spirit" (John 3:3, 8).

Sin against eternal - "Therefore I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men.  Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come" (Matthew 12:31, 32).

In Mark 3:29, Jesus said, "but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is subject to eternal condemnation." And this is because the scribes committed the unpardonable sin.  They said, "He has an unclean spirit" (verse 30).  All other sins and blasphemies will be forgiven men but blasphemy against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven.
