More Examples of Faith in the New Testament
Here are more examples of faith in the New Testament:
Ten Lepers - When Jesus entered a certain village, He was met by ten men who were lepers who stood afar off. They lifted their voices and said to Him, "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!"
When Jesus saw them, He said to them, "Go, show yourselves to the priests."
As they went, they were cleansed. One of them when he saw that he was healed, returned, and with a loud voice glorified God and fell on his face at Jesus' feet, giving Him thanks. This man was a Samaritan.
Jesus asked, "Were there not ten cleanses? But where are the nine? Were there not any found who returned to give glory to God except this foreigner?"
And He said to him, "Arise, go Your way. Your faith has made you well" (Luke 17:11-19).
All ten men went to Jesus in faith, believing that He could cleanse them yet only one of them returned to thank Him and glorified God. He was a Samaritan whom the Jews looked down upon. The other nine were Jews.
Certain nobleman - When Jesus was in Cana of Galilee, a certain nobleman whose son was sick in Capernaum heart that He had come out of Judea into Galilee. He went to Him and begged Him to come down and heal his son who was at the point of death.
Jesus said to him, "Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will by no means believe."
The nobleman said to Him, "Sir, come down before my child dies!"
Jesus said to him, "Go your way; your son lives." The man believed what Jesus said and went his way.
As he was going down, his servants met him and told him that his son lives. He asked them at what hour did he get better and they told him, "Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him."
The man realized that it was at the same hour when Jesus said to him, "Your son lives," and he and his whole household believed (John 4:46-54).
In faith, the nobleman went to Jesus. He believed that He could heal his son and save his life.
Mary and Martha - both sisters believed that if Jesus had been there, their brother, Lazarus would not have died. Martha said to Him, "But even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give You."
Jesus told her that her brother will rise again and she said that she knew that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.
Jesus told her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?"
Martha replied that she believed that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God who is come into the world. Then, she went to call her sister, Mary (John 11:1-22).
Jesus could have gone when He heard that Lazarus was sick but He stayed two more days where He was. Then, He said to disciples, "Let us go to Judea." By now Lazarus was dead (verses 6, 7).
Jesus told the disciples that, "Our friend Lazarus sleeps, but I go that I may wake him up." The disciples didn't realize that Jesus was saying that Lazarus was dead and that He was going to raise him. They thought that if Lazarus sleeps, he will get well. They thought that Jesus was saying that Lazarus was taking rest in sleep (verses 11-13).
So, Jesus said plainly to them, "Lazarus is dead. And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, that you may believe. Nevertheless, let us go to him" (verses 14, 15).
Thomas - When Jesus appeared to the disciples after His resurrection, Thomas was not there. When they told him that they had seen the Lord, he said to them, "Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe."
It must have seemed too fantastic to Thomas that Jesus had appeared to the others and that He was alive. However, eight days later, Jesus came and stood among them. This time, Thomas was there.
After saying, "Peace to you," to all of them, Jesus spoke to Thomas. "Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing."
Thomas said to Him, "My Lord and my God!"
Jesus said to him, "Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed" (John 20:24-29).
It is interesting that Jesus told Thomas to do the very things, i.e. "reach your finger here, reach your hand here and put it into My side," which he said would be the only proof by which he would believe.
Multitudes - And believers were increasingly added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women (Acts 5:12).
Stephen - And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and signs among the people (Acts 6:8).
Samaritans- Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria and preached Christ to them. And the multitudes with one accord heeded the things spoken by Philip, hearing and seeing the miracles which He did. For unclean spirits, crying with a loud voice, came out of many who were possessed and many who were paralyzed and lame were healed. And there was great joy in the city.
There was a man named Simon, who previously practiced sorcery in the city, astonishing the people of Samaria, claiming that he was someone great. They gave heed to to him, the least to the greatest, saying, "This man is the great power of God." And they heeded him because he had astonished them with his sorceries for a long time.
But when they believed Philip as he preached the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized (Acts 8:5-12).
God sent Philip to the people of Samaria to deliver them from Satan who had blinded and deceived them through the sorceries of Simon. These people were living in spiritual darkness until God sent light through Philip.
